“Mississippi Heritage Hands” / manicure, Missississippi Gulf Coast 2011

Divinatory meaning: All Things Are Yours.

Helene Cixous wonders what we are doing while waiting to write the book (other than keeping our appointment with writing the book and doing so). The big life happens in the one you are in, no other! (if you could make yourself the center of your world, if you could live that way, in a way that contradicts some of your present choices, everything would integrate).

Trash (personal collection): Glasgow, Scotland (# 1 – 100)

Divinatory meaning: Adieu!

Finally (and not without a solitary and bittersweet, lunar evening or two or many).

You just can no longer be in the choiceless-choice place when it comes to this particular truth — the one where it has felt impossible to know, to choose. Time to move on. Let your leaving also double as an offering to the larger mystery of having loved deeply (but nonetheless it is time to go).

Naked 1070′s playing card (4 of hearts) compliments of Matt + a fragment from Guenevere’s scrapbook

Divinatory meaning:  Knock-knock! Who’s there? You.

When saving yourself comes at the cost of alienating others you probably need to: 1.) Examine your defensiveness and locate its source, 2.) Notice where you are inappropriatley compensating yourself for abiding with difficult things, and  3.) Become your own best advocate.

The truth is even if Mr. or Mrs. Perfect could save you (or the right job or situation or home or boots), you would not be satisfied. Why? Because of what you already know. You – and only you – must and can give yourself back to yourself.

Plague Years: Death Portrait (personal collection)

Divinatory meaning: Don’t Give in to Cynicism tra la la!

What griefs are you addicted to? (the ones you can’t imagine a day or a life without).

If you can answer that, you’ll know why you aren’t moving forward.

Child in snow with darling bear / gift from Deborah Poe

Divinatory meaning: Lazarus!

Hibernation period over (despite past hurts and upsets!). Time to wake up. Time to understand you won’t be undone by poverty paradigms (in all their manifest forms). You are being called out of repose, back into the land of the living. For all of its messy, bright complexities – it is where you belong.

From personal Hands Collection (vase, gift from Bushwick Farms / pink puffy puff, Adam)

Divinatory meaning: Hello. Hi.

It is good to look forward, but not at the expense of generosity, which includes, among other things and in particular, inviting intimacy into your life: extending authentic invitations to others so that you can be truly seen. Don’t set your table and not offer the guests any food. Risk risking bigger dreams all the while being in your life, this moment, your body. Start in the swamps of where you are (or you aren’t likely to get far).

Planchette : handmade birthday gift from Danielle & H.r. / 2011

Divinatory meaning: Butterfly.

Ask your thinking – your thinking patterns – to be in service of your truth. In other words – how does your thinking create stories/narratives that reinforce old wounds and don’t serve your moment?  Asking your thinking to be in service of your truth instantly creates boundaries and also creates an opening for you to be heard (most especially by yourself).

Divinatory meaning: Hark!

Hark, late 12c., from O.E. (shimmering within hieran (hear) / often cognated with various forms of “listen”).  To hark (appears mid 1800′s) : originally concerning hounds. How they lose but then rediscover the scent. And there is not much I can add to that.

Glorious Child / antique mid-western mortuary fan, mail prize from Rebecca Brown

Divinatory meaning: Candy Cane.

The candy cane was a body punch used by Sugar Ray Robinson (thrown with a right hand to the body slightly turning it over and pushing downward).

If you are a boxing fan than you know that often in the 3rd or 4th round of a decent match both fighters are so exhausted that there is a moment when they don’t appear to be fighting at all, but embracing – rather like slow dancing. That tender fabric between fighting and surrender – wrap yourself in it and allow the changes to happen.

Trash (personal collection): Beauty / somewhere between Asheville and Denver, 2009

Divinatory meaning: Wabi-Sabi.

It’s a tall order – to find beauty in what is decaying, what reeks of the wound. And on your knees, at the sight of it, it can feel extremely disempowering.

Nonetheless a new appreciation of beauty comes through – and transforms your life – once you have refused those postures and adaptations which are not congruent with who you truly are in your life, at this time (up, off the knees and now: standing). It is time to come up with a new scale with which to measure worth, in particular your own. Ghosts don’t get to decide.
